BD Bachelor of Divinity
About this course
Divinity is the academic study of theology in its broadest sense, encompassing the doctrines, history, texts, and practices of the Christian tradition alongside engagement with the major religions of the world. A Bachelor of Divinity is one of the oldest degree programmes in the Western university tradition, and it continues to address some of the most fundamental questions that human beings ask: about God, truth, morality, the nature of the sacred, and the sources of spiritual and ethical life. To study divinity is to engage seriously with a body of thought and practice that has shaped civilisations and continues to shape billions of lives. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree focuses on the Christian faith and tradition within the context of its history, institutions, and contemporary role, while also offering engagement with the world's major religions. The programme carries accreditation with the Church of Scotland, providing a pathway for those considering ministry, while also developing the scholarly skills, including textual analysis, historical research, and ethical reasoning, that are valuable across many other careers. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to engage with different theological and religious traditions in another academic and cultural environment. The typical entry tariff is 152 points. Divinity graduates pursue careers in Christian ministry, chaplaincy, education, social work, community development, journalism, heritage, and the third sector, as well as in academic research and teaching. The combination of theological depth, historical knowledge, and ethical awareness is valued in any role that involves working with diverse communities or addressing questions of values and meaning. Postgraduate study in theology, ethics, religious studies, or related social sciences is a natural continuation.
