BA Arts and Humanities with Foundation Year
About this course
Arts and humanities degrees develop the capabilities that sit at the heart of the human sciences: the ability to engage critically with texts and cultural objects, to construct well-reasoned arguments, to understand the historical and social contexts in which ideas and works have been produced, and to communicate with clarity and precision. The breadth of the arts and humanities encompasses literature, languages, history, philosophy, religion, music, art history, and more, and students who enter through a foundation year pathway have the advantage of exploring this breadth before committing to a specific degree subject. At the University of Leeds, this four-year programme is designed to support progression onto a wide range of degree courses within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, or into Geography. The foundation year provides a supported transition into degree-level study, building academic skills, subject knowledge, and the confidence to engage with university-level arts and humanities work. You then progress into your chosen subject for the remaining three years. Leeds is one of the UK's leading universities for arts and humanities, with significant research strength across the disciplines the faculty covers. The programme includes a sandwich year with placement and a year abroad option, as well as work placement opportunities, giving you practical and international experiences within the degree. The careers that arts and humanities degrees lead to are as diverse as the disciplines themselves. Graduates work in education, publishing, journalism, museums and heritage, the civil service, law, creative industries, communications, policy, and many other fields. The common thread is the ability to think critically, write well, and engage with complex and contested material, capabilities that are valued wherever communication, analysis, and judgement matter. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in their specific discipline or in interdisciplinary fields.
