MA Art History
About this course
Art history is the discipline that asks us to look carefully and think rigorously about visual culture: the paintings, sculptures, architecture, photographs, films, and designed objects through which human beings have expressed ideas, organised power, represented experience, and made meaning across all cultures and periods. It is fundamentally an analytical discipline, requiring you to develop visual literacy alongside the historical and theoretical knowledge needed to interpret images and objects in their context. Art history also raises some of the most interesting questions in the humanities about aesthetics, identity, politics, and the relationship between cultural production and the wider societies in which it occurs. At St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your capacity to analyse the history, context, style, and meaning of images and objects across a wide range of periods and traditions. You will engage with different critical approaches and theoretical frameworks, building the intellectual tools to explore the complex role that visual culture plays in questions of aesthetics, politics, power, and identity, and to understand how art and its display have both reflected and shaped history and experience. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study art history in a different cultural and institutional environment. Graduates move into careers in museums, galleries, auction houses, art journalism and criticism, arts administration, heritage management, publishing, education, and the cultural sector more broadly. The analytical skills that art history develops are also valued in law, finance, and the civil service. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in art history, curatorial practice, or museum studies, building specialist expertise for research and senior cultural sector roles.
