BA Art History and Visual Culture
About this course
Art history and visual culture is a discipline that teaches you to look, to read, and to think with images. It asks how visual objects, from ancient sculpture and medieval manuscripts to Renaissance paintings, modernist abstraction, photography, film, and digital art, have been made, understood, and contested across different historical periods and cultural contexts. It is not simply the study of great masterpieces: it is an inquiry into how visual meaning is constructed and how images participate in the social, political, religious, and economic worlds that produce them. At the University of Exeter, this three-year, full-time programme draws on a teaching staff with remarkable breadth of specialism, offering a diverse range of module choices that allow you to pursue the areas that genuinely interest you most. You will develop skills in formal and iconographic analysis, contextual interpretation, and critical engagement with art historical theory and methodology, working across different media, periods, and traditions. The programme includes a sandwich placement year for extended professional experience, a year abroad to study in a different cultural and academic environment, and work placement integrated into the course. These structural features give you substantial real-world exposure and an international dimension that enrich your academic development and strengthen your profile for employers and postgraduate programmes. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects a competitive but accessible admissions profile. Graduates from art history and visual culture programmes go on to careers in museums and galleries, arts administration and cultural policy, heritage organisations, auction houses, commercial galleries, publishing, arts journalism, and education. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are also valued in marketing, public relations, and digital communications roles. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in art history, curatorial practice, visual studies, or related fields, building the specialist expertise needed for senior roles in the cultural sector.
