About this course

Art and contemporary practices at the University of the Highlands and Islands is a part-time degree that situates creative practice within the broader social and cultural contexts of the contemporary art world, asking not just what art looks like but what it does and who it is for. Contemporary art is defined not only by its aesthetic qualities but by its engagement with ideas, communities, and the world beyond the gallery: participatory practices, public art, community-based projects, relational aesthetics, digital creation, and art in educational contexts all figure within the field. This programme explores that breadth, encouraging you to develop your creative identity and to connect your practice to the world around you. You will engage in collaborative and participatory projects, community initiatives, curation, and public art alongside developing individual creative practice. The programme asks you to interpret and contextualise both theory and technical skills, working towards an understanding of how contemporary art creates engagement between the art world and wider communities. The part-time structure makes it accessible to students who are developing their practice alongside other commitments, and the Highlands and Islands setting offers a distinctive context for thinking about art's relationship to place, landscape, and community. Graduates from art and contemporary practices programmes move into careers as practising artists working across a range of contexts, as community arts practitioners, arts educators, curators, arts administrators, and in roles within cultural and heritage organisations. Many continue to postgraduate study in fine art, curatorial practice, or arts management, building on the conceptual and practical foundation the degree provides.
