BArch Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the discipline concerned with the design of buildings and the environments that surround them. It is at once a creative practice, a technical discipline, and a social and cultural undertaking, asking how the spaces we inhabit can be functional, beautiful, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of the people who use them. Architecture requires you to think simultaneously across scales, from the detail of a door handle to the relationship between a building and its urban context, and to work with the constraints of materials, structure, climate, budget, and planning regulations without losing sight of the fundamental goal of creating spaces that work and endure. At the University of Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme is set in a historic city with roots stretching back to Roman Britain, providing an inspiring context in which to explore the relationship between architecture, heritage, and contemporary design. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to work in an architectural practice before your final year. A year abroad is also incorporated, and work placement is part of the degree. These features mean that you engage with professional architectural practice at multiple points during your studies, developing the skills and networks that will matter after graduation. You will study architectural design, structural systems, environmental performance, construction technology, and the history and theory of architecture. You will produce design work across a range of scales and contexts, developing both technical competence and creative confidence. The critical and analytical skills you develop through the history and theory components of the programme are as important as the design skills themselves. Graduates who wish to qualify as architects continue to further professional study and practical training. Others work in related fields including urban design, planning, heritage conservation, project management, and interior architecture. Postgraduate study in architecture or a related discipline is the standard route to full professional qualification.
