About this course

Architecture is the art and discipline of designing the built environment, from individual buildings to urban spaces. It requires you to hold simultaneously in mind the aesthetic and the functional, the social and the technical, the visionary and the practically achievable. Architects shape the physical world people inhabit, and their work involves engaging with construction technology, structural principles, environmental performance, planning law, and the human needs that buildings must serve. It is a long and demanding path of professional formation, but one that leads to one of the most varied and creatively rewarding of all professions. At London South Bank University, this part-time programme is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), providing the first of three steps towards becoming a qualified architect. You will develop skills in design, drawing, model-making, and digital visualisation alongside an understanding of architectural history and theory, structural systems, building technology, and the social and cultural contexts in which buildings are made. The programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a thorough introduction to design thinking and technical skills before you progress to the full architectural curriculum. A year abroad gives you international design exposure and the opportunity to study architecture in a different cultural context. The part-time mode allows you to study while managing other commitments. Completion of the first RIBA stage opens the route to further professional study and eventual ARB registration as an architect, but architecture graduates also work in urban design, interior design, heritage conservation, project management, planning, and the construction industry more broadly. The combination of design intelligence, spatial thinking, and technical knowledge the degree develops is valued across many built-environment professions.
