BA Architecture
About this course
Architecture is a discipline that sits at the meeting point of art, engineering, social science and environmental responsibility. It asks how the built environment should be designed to serve the people who inhabit it, the communities that surround it and the planet that sustains it. Good architecture is never simply about aesthetics or technical performance in isolation; it involves balancing competing demands, understanding how space affects human experience and making decisions with long-term consequences for how people live and work. At Birmingham City University this three-year full-time BA approaches the subject as an act of care, aiming to develop students who are thoughtful, creative and equipped to redefine what architectural practice can look like. You will develop skills in design, drawing and modelling alongside an understanding of structural principles, materials and building technology. The course incorporates a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to gain practical experience in an architectural practice or related industry before completing your studies. A work placement element is also embedded in the programme, reinforcing the connection between academic study and professional practice. A BA in Architecture is the first stage of a professional pathway that typically continues with a postgraduate qualification and a period of practical training before full professional accreditation. During and after your studies, the skills you develop in spatial thinking, design communication, project analysis and creative problem-solving open doors in a range of fields. Many graduates go on to postgraduate architectural study, while others find roles in urban design, interior architecture, heritage conservation, property development, landscape architecture or related construction and design industries. The critical thinking and visual communication abilities the degree builds are also valued in areas such as film production design and product design.
