BArch Architecture
About this course
Architecture is among the most ambitious of the professional disciplines, combining technical knowledge of structures, materials, and environmental systems with design thinking, cultural awareness, and the ability to imagine spaces that serve human needs across time. Architects shape the built environment in which all of life takes place: homes, workplaces, schools, hospitals, civic buildings, and public spaces. The profession demands both creative vision and rigorous problem-solving, and the education that leads to it is correspondingly demanding and broad. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme represents the first stage of the professional qualification route, typically referred to as Part 1. You will develop design skills through studio projects, learning to move from concept to technical drawing and from two-dimensional representation to three-dimensional form. Building construction, structures, and environmental design are studied alongside the history and theory of architecture, placing your own design work in a broader cultural and intellectual context. Digital design tools, including computer-aided design and building information modelling, are integrated throughout, reflecting the professional standards now expected in practice. Graduates from this Part 1 programme typically proceed to Part 2 study, either at NTU or elsewhere, followed by a year of professional experience and a Part 3 qualification, after which they can register as architects with the Architects Registration Board. Some graduates enter the construction industry directly in roles such as architectural technologist, project manager, or design consultant before returning to complete their qualification. The creative, technical, and problem-solving skills developed also transfer to urban design, interior design, heritage conservation, and property development. Architecture is a demanding but richly rewarding field for those who are genuinely committed to the built environment.
