BSc Architectural Technology and Design
About this course
Architectural technology and design sits at the boundary between architecture and engineering, concerned with the technical and design intelligence needed to realise buildings that are structurally sound, environmentally responsible, and fit for purpose. Architectural technologists are the professionals who bridge the gap between the conceptual designs of architects and the technical realities of construction, ensuring that buildings work as well as they look. They are expert in building construction, materials, building physics, environmental performance, and the regulatory and contractual frameworks that govern the construction process. At UWE Bristol you will study this three-year full-time programme, developing skills in architectural design alongside a rigorous grounding in construction technology, building information modelling, environmental performance, and the technical production that turns design intent into constructed reality. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic study. These structured opportunities are particularly important in a profession where practical knowledge of real construction projects is central to professional development. The programme's strong employment outcomes reflect the value of this combination of design skill and technical rigour. Architectural technology graduates work in architectural practices, engineering consultancies, contractor organisations, client-side project teams, and local authority building control. Roles include architectural technologist, BIM coordinator, technical architect, and building information manager. The profession is regulated by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, and many graduates pursue chartered membership. The combination of design sensitivity and technical knowledge is also valued in property development, construction management, and sustainable building consultancy. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in architectural technology, sustainable architecture, or construction project management.
