MA Archaeology/Classics
About this course
Archaeology and classics are disciplines that have always been deeply connected, both concerned with understanding the ancient world through the evidence it has left behind. Archaeology approaches that task through the material record: the objects, structures, landscapes, and biological remains that survive from the lives of ancient people. Classics brings the textual and artistic dimension: the literature, history, philosophy, and art of Greece and Rome. Together, they give you the fullest possible picture of the ancient Mediterranean world and its remarkable civilisations. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time programme develops your skills in both archaeological investigation and classical scholarship. You will study the methods and theory of archaeology alongside the history, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, with the opportunity to learn Latin and Greek if you wish. You will engage with how people in the past interacted with their world through the objects, sites, and landscapes they left behind, and with how the textual tradition of antiquity illuminates and is illuminated by that material evidence. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to engage with the ancient world from a different academic and cultural perspective. Graduates go on to careers in academic research, museum curation, archaeological fieldwork, heritage management, teaching, publishing, journalism, and the cultural sector. The combination of analytical skills, language competence, and specialist knowledge of the ancient world that the degree develops is valued in a range of roles. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in classics, ancient history, or archaeology, and some pursue research careers that contribute to the ongoing exploration of the ancient Mediterranean world.
