BSc Applied Animal Science
About this course
Applied animal science is the study of how scientific principles can be put to practical use in the management, welfare, and sustainable use of animals in agricultural and related contexts. It asks how animals grow, reproduce, and respond to their environment, how their welfare can be assessed and protected, and how the systems in which they are kept can be made more efficient and ethical. As pressure on food production intensifies and public concern about animal welfare grows, the need for graduates who can translate biological science into practical improvement has never been greater. At Harper Adams University, which is the UK's specialist university for agriculture and food science, this four-year full-time programme develops both your scientific knowledge and your practical skills in applied settings. You will study animal physiology, nutrition, reproductive biology, genetics and breeding, behaviour, welfare assessment, and the production systems used for livestock. The programme engages with current debates about sustainable animal production, environmental impact, and the future of protein in human diets, equipping you to think critically about the systems you will work in as well as to operate within them. Harper Adams's farm and practical facilities mean that applied learning is genuinely embedded in the degree rather than treated as an add-on. Graduates from applied animal science programmes work in livestock production management, veterinary support roles, animal welfare organisations, agricultural consultancy, government agencies, and the feed and pharmaceutical industries that serve agriculture. Many also pursue postgraduate study in animal science, veterinary science, agriculture, and food policy, and the combination of scientific rigour and practical focus that Harper Adams provides is valued by employers across the agricultural sector.
