About this course

Ancient History and Classical Archaeology is a discipline that investigates the civilisations of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East through a combination of written sources and material evidence. Ancient history brings the skills of the historian to bear on the literary, documentary, and inscriptional record of Greece, Rome, Egypt, and the wider ancient world, asking how political, social, cultural, and economic life worked in these civilisations and how they changed over time. Classical archaeology extends this enquiry through the analysis of material remains, from monumental buildings and sculpture to everyday objects and landscape features, developing a different but complementary picture of the ancient world. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme with study in Europe develops critical analysis, communication, and creative thinking through engagement with the history, archaeology, and art of the ancient world. You will learn to work with both textual and material evidence, developing the interpretive skills needed to move between these two kinds of source and to understand what each can and cannot tell us. The third year is spent studying abroad at one of Warwick's partner universities, giving you the opportunity to encounter the ancient world's physical remains in the landscapes and museums of Europe and to study in a different academic tradition. Graduates of ancient history and classical archaeology programmes go on to careers in education, heritage, museums, archival work, journalism, publishing, the civil service, and cultural organisations. The transferable skills developed in the discipline, including close reading, rigorous argument, and the ability to work with incomplete and ambiguous evidence, are valued across any field that rewards careful analytical thinking. Postgraduate study in classical studies, ancient history, classical archaeology, or heritage management is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
