Aerospace engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development, testing, and operation of aircraft and spacecraft. It encompasses aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight mechanics, avionics, materials science, and systems engineering, applying them to vehicles that must perform in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. As the aerospace industry transforms in response to sustainability pressures, electrification, urban air mobility, and expanding commercial space access, aerospace engineers are at the centre of some of the most ambitious engineering challenges of the coming decades. At the University of Nottingham this four-year full-time programme includes both a foundation year and a sandwich placement year with work placement component, making it one of the most comprehensively supported routes through aerospace engineering. The foundation year provides the additional scientific and mathematical preparation for students approaching from a broader range of backgrounds, while the placement year provides substantial professional experience in aerospace or related engineering industries before you graduate. You will study aerodynamics, propulsion, structural mechanics, materials, flight mechanics, avionics, and systems integration, with access to Nottingham's excellent engineering facilities. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the scientific and technical standard expected. You will develop rigorous analytical and design engineering skills, the ability to work with complex multidisciplinary systems, and the professional experience to contribute to real engineering teams from graduation. Graduates work in aerospace manufacturing, aircraft design, propulsion engineering, avionics, defence, the space sector, and engineering consultancy. Many pursue chartered engineer status. Postgraduate study in aerospace or related fields is a natural continuation for those with research or advanced specialist ambitions.
