About this course

Aeronautics and astronautics with a specialism in aerodynamics is a programme at the frontier of aerospace engineering, focusing on the science and engineering of how objects move through fluids. Aerodynamics is fundamental to the design of aircraft, spacecraft, racing cars, wind turbines, and almost anything that moves through air or water at speed. Understanding how lift, drag, and flow behaviour are produced, predicted, and controlled requires a deep command of fluid mechanics, mathematics, and computational modelling, as well as the engineering judgement to design vehicles and systems that perform reliably in demanding conditions. This four-year, full-time MEng programme at Southampton, one of the UK's leading aerospace engineering departments, gives you the knowledge and skills to analyse and control aerodynamic behaviour at an advanced level. You will learn to design wings, propulsion systems, and vehicles, to model flow behaviour computationally, and to understand the aerodynamic challenges facing both conventional aircraft and next-generation space vehicles. Southampton has particular strength in aerodynamics research, and the MEng level of the programme means you engage with that research context as well as with the professional engineering skills needed for industry roles. Graduates of aeronautics and astronautics with aerodynamics are well prepared for careers in the aerospace industry, including positions with aircraft manufacturers, engine makers, the Formula 1 and motorsport sectors, defence contractors, and space agencies. The MEng qualification is recognised by the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Engineering Council, and supports professional registration toward chartered engineer status. Roles in aerodynamic design, computational fluid dynamics, systems engineering, and technical project management are typical career paths. Further postgraduate research in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, or aerospace engineering is an option for those drawn to academic or advanced research careers.
