BEng Aeronautical Engineering with a Foundation Year
About this course
Aeronautical engineering is the discipline that makes flight possible. It encompasses the design, analysis, and testing of aircraft and the systems that keep them airborne, drawing on aerodynamics, structural mechanics, propulsion, materials science, and control systems to address some of the most technically demanding challenges in engineering. The field spans civil and military aviation, spacecraft, and increasingly, the emerging technologies of unmanned aerial vehicles and sustainable propulsion that are reshaping what flight will look like in the future. This four-year full-time degree at Loughborough University includes an integrated foundation year, which provides a thorough grounding in the mathematical and scientific principles that underpin engineering study. The foundation year is designed primarily for students who have not studied the prerequisite subjects required for direct first-year entry, including mature students returning to education, care leavers, and those whose prior education was affected by adverse circumstances or by commitments in sport. It offers a supported route into the main degree for students who have the ability and motivation to succeed in engineering but who need to build their foundational knowledge first. From the foundation year onward, you will study aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aircraft structures, propulsion, avionics, and engineering design, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills that professional aeronautical engineering demands. Graduates of aeronautical engineering programmes go on to careers in aircraft design, structural analysis, propulsion engineering, flight testing, aerospace manufacturing, and defence. Airlines, aerospace companies, defence contractors, and space agencies are all significant employers, as are consultancies and research institutions. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study or professional engineering registration, building towards chartered status and senior technical roles in an industry that remains central to global connectivity and national security.
