About this course

Acting for musical theatre is one of the most demanding of all performing arts training programmes, requiring you to develop high-level skills as an actor, singer, and dancer simultaneously and to integrate all three into a single, cohesive performance practice. Musical theatre is a form that makes extraordinary demands on performers: the genre encompasses everything from classic Broadway and West End shows through to contemporary immersive productions and hybrid digital formats, and the performers who thrive in it must be versatile, technically accomplished, and able to find truth and spontaneity within the disciplined context of song, dance, and staged production. At the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, this three-year full-time programme is built on highly practical training that produces skilled actors who are accomplished singers and dancers. You will work intensively across all three disciplines throughout the programme, developing your vocal technique, your physical and movement skills, and your acting craft in ways that are always connected to the demands of performing in a genre that integrates them. LIPA's faculty includes professional practitioners with direct industry experience, and the training environment reflects the professional world you will enter. You will perform in productions, work on a repertoire that spans the history of musical theatre and its contemporary forms, and develop the professional skills, including audition technique, professional resilience, and self-presentation, that a career in performance demands. The programme also prepares you to work in digital mediums, reflecting the expanding range of contexts in which musical theatre performers now work. You will graduate as a multifaceted performer with the range and technical ability to pursue a professional career in musical theatre, other live performance contexts, and digital entertainment. Graduates go on to work as professional performers in West End and regional productions, touring shows, cruise ships, film and television, and digital productions. Many also work in education, community arts, and arts facilitation.
