About this course

Acting and Psychology is a combination that reflects something important about what acting really involves. The craft of acting, at its most demanding, is fundamentally about human psychology: understanding motivation and behaviour, inhabiting a character's inner life convincingly, communicating emotion and thought through voice and body, and responding authentically to other people in the moment. Formal psychological knowledge, of how the mind works, how emotions function, how behaviour is shaped by social context and how people perceive and interpret each other, directly enriches acting practice. At Liverpool Hope University, the three-year full-time degree develops your acting skills through practice-based studio work alongside formal study of psychology. The acting component covers performance for stage and screen, voice and movement training, character development, text analysis and rehearsal practice. The psychology strand introduces you to the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes, covering topics that are directly relevant to acting practice: emotion, perception, memory, social cognition and personality. Together, the two disciplines develop a rounded understanding of human experience that informs creative work and opens up a broad range of professional options. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in performance or psychology-related settings and to encounter different theatrical and cultural traditions. Liverpool's active arts scene and its theatres, film studios and creative industries provide a stimulating backdrop for practical work. Graduates pursue careers in acting on stage and screen, arts education, drama therapy, theatre-in-education, community arts, psychology-adjacent roles in counselling, coaching and human resources, and the wider creative industries. Many go on to further professional or postgraduate training in acting, drama therapy or psychology.
