HND Accounting
About this course
Accounting is the technical discipline concerned with the measurement, recording, interpretation and communication of financial information within organisations and to their external stakeholders. It is the language of business, providing the numbers and frameworks through which managers make decisions, investors evaluate companies, governments assess tax liabilities, and regulators ensure compliance. Accounting encompasses financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, financial analysis and the governance frameworks that ensure organisations are held accountable for how they use their resources. At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will study accounting on a part-time basis, attending scheduled classes and completing course tasks independently, either through work set by your lecturer or through independent study. This flexible mode of delivery makes the programme accessible to students who want to build professional accounting knowledge alongside work or other commitments, and the Highland and Islands setting provides a distinctive context for the study of a discipline with universal professional relevance. You will develop knowledge of financial and management accounting, business law, taxation and the analytical skills needed to interpret and communicate financial information across different organisational contexts. Accounting graduates work in accountancy practices, financial roles within businesses, public sector finance, taxation, audit and financial management. Many pursue professional qualifications through bodies such as ACCA, ICAS, CIMA or ICAEW, using their undergraduate study as a foundation for chartered status and the career progression that professional accounting qualifications enable. The combination of accounting knowledge and analytical skill is valuable across every sector where organisations need to manage financial information with rigour and accuracy, and accounting qualifications remain among the most globally portable and consistently in-demand professional credentials.
