BA Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year
About this course
Accounting and finance is the language through which organisations understand and communicate their financial position, performance and prospects. Accounting provides the frameworks and techniques for recording, reporting and auditing financial information, ensuring that businesses, governments and other organisations are accountable to their stakeholders. Finance examines how money is raised, invested and managed, addressing decisions about capital, risk, valuation and the behaviour of financial markets. Together these disciplines equip you to understand the financial dimensions of any organisation and to contribute to the decisions that determine its sustainability and success. At the University of Derby this four-year, full-time programme begins with a foundation year, giving you a structured route into degree-level study if you would benefit from additional preparation before the main accounting and finance content begins. You will then study financial and management accounting, corporate finance, taxation, auditing, financial reporting, investment analysis and business law, building the technical knowledge that underpins professional practice. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, all of which provide direct professional experience in accounting, finance or business environments before graduation. These structured opportunities are particularly valuable in a profession where practical experience matters enormously alongside academic qualification. Graduates pursue careers in accounting practice, financial management, audit, tax, investment banking, corporate finance, management consultancy, treasury and financial planning across private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Professional qualification is a common next step, and the degree is designed to provide exemptions from some professional exams through leading accountancy bodies. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in accounting, finance, business administration or related fields, building on the undergraduate foundation to develop specialist expertise and professional credentials.
