BA Accounting and Business Law
About this course
Accounting and business law is a combination that addresses two of the most fundamental aspects of how commercial and institutional life is organised: the measurement and reporting of financial activity, and the legal frameworks that govern what organisations and individuals can do. Accounting provides the language through which financial performance, position and risk are communicated to investors, managers, regulators and other stakeholders. Business law supplies the rules within which commercial relationships are formed, obligations are enforced and disputes are resolved. Together they prepare you for roles at the centre of financial and legal practice, both in the UK and internationally. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time degree develops your knowledge of accounting principles alongside a rigorous introduction to contract, company, employment and commercial law. You will study the preparation, presentation and interpretation of financial statements, management accounting and control, audit, taxation and the regulatory environment in which accountants practise, while the law component builds your understanding of how legal rules govern business transactions, company structures, employee rights and commercial disputes. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you an international dimension and the experience of studying in a different legal and commercial context. Typical entry is around 216 UCAS tariff points. Graduates are well positioned for professional careers in accountancy, law, finance, taxation and corporate governance. Many go on to qualify with professional accountancy bodies or pursue the Graduate Diploma in Law as a route toward legal qualification, while others move directly into roles in financial services, audit, corporate finance, taxation, compliance and commercial management. The combination of financial and legal expertise is particularly valued by organisations that need professionals who understand both the numbers and the rules by which commercial activity must abide.
