Renewable Energy Engineer

AI

Are you passionate about saving the planet and creating a sustainable future? As a Renewable Energy Engineer, you'll design and develop innovative solutions that harness the power of wind, solar, and other renewable sources. Join a growing field where your ideas can make a real difference and help combat climate change!

The role

What a renewable energy engineer actually does, day to day.

Renewable Energy Engineers design and build the systems that capture clean power from sources like wind, sun and water. As the UK works towards cutting its carbon emissions, these engineers are key to replacing fossil fuels and tackling climate change. It's a job where the work you do has a direct effect on the planet's future.

Day to day, you might be modelling how much energy a wind or solar farm could produce, visiting sites to check conditions, or working through technical designs on a computer. You analyse data to make systems more efficient and work alongside other engineers, planners and clients to get projects built. As you gain experience, you may lead projects and manage budgets and deadlines.

You'll need strong maths and science skills, plus the ability to solve problems and think carefully about detail. Good teamwork and clear communication matter too, since projects involve lots of people. Many engineers find it rewarding to see a project go from an idea on a screen to a working power source that supplies real homes.

  • Problem solving: You work out how to make energy systems perform better and cost less.
  • Technical knowledge: A solid grasp of engineering and physics underpins everything you design.
  • Attention to detail: Small errors in a design can be costly, so accuracy is essential.
  • Teamwork: You'll work closely with engineers, planners, clients and site crews.
  • Data skills: Analysing measurements and performance data is a big part of the job.
  • Care for the environment: A genuine interest in sustainability keeps you motivated.
A typical week

Day to day

1Use software to model how much energy a wind or solar project could generate.
2Visit sites to assess conditions like wind speed, sunlight or ground stability.
3Analyse performance data to find ways to improve energy efficiency.
4Prepare technical drawings and design documents for renewable systems.
5Meet with team members, clients and planners to discuss project progress.
6Check that installations meet safety standards and technical requirements.
7Help manage budgets and timelines to keep projects on track.
