The role
What a police constable actually does, day to day.
As a police constable, you are a member of a team that keeps people safe. You might be the first person to arrive when someone calls 999, or you might be walking around a neighbourhood stopping crimes before they happen. The work is different every day and it can be tough - sometimes you see things that upset you - but you know you are helping real people.
In a typical shift you will patrol your area on foot or by car, answer emergency calls, speak to people in trouble, and sometimes investigate crimes by talking to witnesses and collecting clues. You need to be fit and calm under pressure, able to think fast and make good decisions when things are stressful. You also spend time filling in paperwork about what happened, and you work closely with other police officers and emergency services.
