Food Safety Inspector

AI

Meat hygiene inspectors check that meat is safe to eat. They visit abattoirs, processing plants and shops to make sure meat is handled properly and does not carry harmful bacteria.

The role

What a food safety inspector actually does, day to day.

As a meat hygiene inspector, you make sure the public is protected from unsafe meat. You visit meat plants and abattoirs, check how the work is done, and test samples in the lab to look for harmful bacteria. You read records, inspect equipment, and make sure staff follow the rules.

Your work involves understanding the whole meat supply chain - from slaughter through to packaging and delivery. You look for problems, teach staff how to do things safely, and write reports about what you find. You work with the Food Standards Agency and other bodies to stop foodborne illness. The work is detailed and careful - a small mistake in hygiene could make people ill.
