Independent Living Carers

AI

Independent living carers support people with disabilities or health conditions to do the things they want in life - washing, cooking, going out - while keeping them safe and well. They work in people's homes and make a real difference to their daily lives.

The role

What an independent living carers actually does, day to day.

As an independent living carer, you help people stay independent at home. You might support someone with a physical disability, an older person, or someone getting better after an illness. Every person is different - one might need help with cooking and cleaning, another with getting washed and dressed, another with taking medication or getting out and about. Your job is to understand what matters most to each person and help them do it safely.

Most of your work happens in people's homes, which means every day is different. You'll build real relationships with the people you care for, and they'll trust you to help them with personal things. You need patience, a calm manner and genuine warmth - especially when someone is frustrated or worried about needing help. But you also get something precious back: seeing someone smile because you've made their day easier or helped them do something they thought they couldn't do.
