Garment Technologist

AI

Garment technologists make sure clothes are made well. They work with designers to create clothes that look good, fit properly, are comfortable to wear, and are made in a way that does not waste materials.

The role

What a garment technologist actually does, day to day.

As a garment technologist, you are the expert who turns a designer's sketch into a real item of clothing that actually works. You know fabrics inside out - how they behave, what will last, what feels good on skin. You work closely with designers to understand what they want, then translate that into instructions manufacturers can follow.

Your day involves measuring samples on different body shapes to check the fit is right, writing detailed guides that tell manufacturers exactly how to make each garment, checking that finished clothes meet high standards, and troubleshooting problems when something does not turn out right. You keep up with new materials, new techniques and trends in fashion technology, and you think about how to reduce waste and use more sustainable fabrics in everything you do.
