The role
What a detention officer actually does, day to day.
As a detention officer, you will be at the forefront of managing individuals in custody, ensuring their safety and the safety of others within the facility. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include supervising detainees, conducting regular inspections, and maintaining order during activities. You will also be responsible for reporting incidents, managing conflicts, and providing support to detainees, helping them navigate the challenges they face while in custody. This role requires a strong sense of ethics, excellent communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
The environment can be challenging, as you will often deal with individuals who may be distressed or agitated. Building rapport and trust with detainees is essential, as it can significantly impact their behaviour and overall experience. You will work closely with other professionals, including social workers and healthcare staff, to ensure that detainees receive the necessary support and services. This collaborative approach not only enhances the safety of the facility but also contributes to the rehabilitation of individuals, making your role vital in the broader context of the justice system.
