The role
What a celebrants actually does, day to day.
As a celebrant, you create and perform ceremonies that mark life's big moments. You sit down with couples or families to hear their stories, their beliefs, and what they want the day to feel like. Then you write a script, practice it, and on the day you guide everyone through the ceremony with warmth and confidence. You might marry a couple at sunset on a beach, lead a funeral service that celebrates someone's whole life, or bless a new baby with words that mean something to the family.
The work involves a lot of listening and writing, planning practical details, and rehearsing to get the tone just right. You also handle paperwork - for weddings you sign the legal register. The emotional side is important: you will be with people during some of the happiest and saddest moments of their lives. You need to be respectful, warm and organised, and ready to stay calm if something goes wrong on the day. It is deeply meaningful work that brings people together.
