About this apprenticeship

What it involves

The Historic Environment Advisor apprenticeship at Level 7 trains experienced professionals to provide independent, expert advice on the conservation and management of England's historic buildings, landscapes, and archaeological heritage. You will lead heritage impact assessments, advise on complex planning cases, develop policy, and influence how organisations manage their historic assets strategically. It leads to chartered membership of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists or IHBC and senior specialist roles across the sector.

What you’ll do day to day

Lead heritage impact assessments for major development projects
Advise local authorities and developers on complex planning cases
Develop and review heritage policies, guidance, and management plans
Commission and quality assure specialist archaeological investigations
Present evidence at planning inquiries and public hearings
Mentor junior heritage professionals and assistants
Represent the organisation in external stakeholder forums
The deal

How this apprenticeship works

You earn a wage from day one. You are a paid employee, not a student. There are no tuition fees - the training is funded by your employer and the government.
About 20% is “off-the-job” training. Roughly a day a week is spent learning away from your normal duties - at a college, training provider, or online - working towards a recognised qualification.
It ends with an end-point assessment (EPA). Near the end, an independent assessor checks you can do the job to the national standard - through tests, a project, a portfolio or an interview. Pass it and you are fully qualified.

Level 7 (Degree (Master’s)) - roughly Master’s-degree level. Usually needs a relevant degree or Level 6 qualification, or significant experience.
