About this apprenticeship

What it involves

The Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship at Level 3 trains you to safely install, test, commission, and maintain electrical wiring systems in domestic, commercial, and industrial buildings. You will work to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, install cable containment, wiring, sockets, distribution boards, and lighting, and carry out inspection and testing of completed installations. It is one of the most in-demand trade qualifications in the UK and leads to roles as a qualified electrician with self-employment or employed progression.

Electrical principles - circuits, Ohm's Law, and power calculations
BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations and building regulations compliance
Cable installation methods - conduit, trunking, tray, and containment
Electrical testing and inspection - continuity, insulation resistance, and loop impedance
Safe isolation procedures and working safely on electrical systems
Fault diagnosis and repair on single and three-phase systems
Distribution boards, consumer units, and protective device selection
On the job

What you’ll do day to day

Install wiring systems, sockets, switches, and luminaires
Fix cable containment - conduit, trunking, and cable tray
Connect and commission distribution boards and consumer units
Test and certify completed electrical installations
Carry out safe isolation before working on live systems
Diagnose and repair electrical faults on existing installations
Complete Electrical Installation Certificates and inspection records
The deal

How this apprenticeship works

You earn a wage from day one. You are a paid employee, not a student. There are no tuition fees - the training is funded by your employer and the government.
About 20% is “off-the-job” training. Roughly a day a week is spent learning away from your normal duties - at a college, training provider, or online - working towards a recognised qualification.
It ends with an end-point assessment (EPA). Near the end, an independent assessor checks you can do the job to the national standard - through tests, a project, a portfolio or an interview. Pass it and you are fully qualified.

What you need to start

Level 3 (Advanced) - roughly A-level level. Employers usually look for some GCSEs (often English & maths around grade 4/C) or a Level 2 apprenticeship first. English & maths can sometimes be finished during training.
