BSc Bioveterinary Sciences
About this course
Bioveterinary sciences applies the tools and methods of modern biological science to questions about animals: how they are built, how they function physiologically, what diseases affect them and how those diseases interact with human health and wellbeing. It is a discipline that combines rigorous scientific training with a deep engagement with animal biology and the complex relationships between animals and the humans who keep, breed, study and care for them. At the Royal Veterinary College, which is one of the world's leading institutions for veterinary education and research, this three-year full-time programme offers a unique blend of biological sciences relevant to animal health, disease and the human-animal relationship. You will develop a strong grounding in anatomy, physiology, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and immunology as they apply to animal species, building the scientific literacy to understand how disease processes work and how they can be investigated, managed and prevented. The programme includes a sandwich year that provides extended placement experience, as well as a year abroad and a work placement, giving you direct exposure to research, veterinary practice and related professional environments. This breadth of practical experience, combined with the RVC's professional relationships across the veterinary, biomedical and agricultural sectors, means you graduate with both scientific depth and genuine real-world exposure. Graduates from bioveterinary science programmes pursue careers in veterinary research and development, pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, government agencies dealing with animal and public health, conservation organisations and the rapidly growing field of One Health, which examines the connections between human, animal and environmental health. Some go on to postgraduate study in veterinary science, biomedical research or related disciplines, while others move into regulatory affairs, laboratory science or wildlife and zoo management. The RVC's international reputation makes this degree a strong foundation for careers in both the UK and globally.
