BSc Wildlife Conservation Biology with Placement
About this course
Wildlife conservation biology is the applied scientific discipline that brings ecological and biological knowledge to bear on the challenge of protecting and restoring wild species and the habitats they depend on. It combines the rigorous population biology, genetics, ecology and physiology of the life sciences with the conservation management, policy and practical fieldwork skills needed to make a real difference in the race to halt biodiversity loss. At a time when species extinction rates are accelerating and natural habitats are under pressure from agricultural intensification, urban development and climate change, the demand for trained conservation biologists is urgent. At the University of Gloucestershire this four-year, full-time programme includes a placement year in industry, providing dedicated support to help you secure experience that aligns with your conservation interests and career ambitions. Students who take the placement return with invaluable hands-on knowledge and professional credibility that is evident in the quality and confidence of their final-year work. You will study ecology, evolutionary biology, species identification, conservation genetics, wildlife monitoring, habitat management, environmental impact assessment and the legal and policy frameworks that shape conservation practice, developing both the scientific understanding and the practical skills to work effectively in the field. Graduates pursue careers in wildlife conservation organisations, ecological consultancy, national parks, nature reserves, government environmental agencies, international conservation NGOs, zoological institutions, environmental impact assessment, biodiversity net gain measurement and ecological research. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in conservation biology, ecology, zoology or environmental science, and the placement year gives them a significant advantage when applying for competitive roles in a field where practical experience is highly prized.
