BA Voice (Performance and Pedagogy)
About this course
Voice as a discipline occupies a unique position in music education: it is at once the most personal of all instruments, carrying the individual's breath, body and personality directly into sound, and one of the most technically demanding, requiring years of careful training to develop the control, range, resonance and expressive freedom that professional vocal performance demands. A degree in voice performance and pedagogy combines the development of your own performing ability with preparation for the teaching of singing, recognising that for many professional singers, teaching is an integral and rewarding dimension of a sustained musical career. At Leeds Conservatoire you will be able to focus on the genre that most speaks to your musical identity, whether pop, classical, jazz, folk or musical theatre, while exploring a range of different musical styles under expert guidance. The programme develops all aspects of vocal technique and practice, from breath management and resonance through to stylistic versatility, performance skills and the ability to communicate with authenticity across different genres and audiences. The programme runs full time over three years in a conservatoire environment designed for musical training at a high level. You will develop your performance skills through individual tuition, ensemble and choir work, performance opportunities and the kind of intensive musical engagement that a conservatoire education provides. You will also develop the pedagogy skills needed to teach singing effectively across different age groups and contexts, which is increasingly important for professional musicians who want to sustain a versatile career. Graduates from voice performance and pedagogy programmes pursue careers as professional singers in performance, recording and commercial contexts, as singing teachers in private practice, schools and conservatoires, as music directors and choir leaders, and in related roles in music education and the creative industries.
