About this course

Tourism and hospitality management is the study of one of the world's largest and most geographically diverse industries, one that shapes the economies of entire regions, employs tens of millions of people globally and sits at the intersection of culture, environment, business and human experience. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, event companies, travel agencies, cruise lines, heritage attractions and national tourism bodies all require managers who understand how to deliver excellent customer experiences, manage complex operations and respond to the rapidly changing preferences and expectations of a global travelling public. At Coventry University this four-year programme, which includes a foundation year and a sandwich year, develops your understanding of hospitality operations, tourism marketing, revenue management, event planning, sustainability in tourism and the business principles that govern organisations in the sector. You will study consumer behaviour, destination management, the economics of travel and the strategic and cultural dimensions of tourism, developing a rounded management education alongside sector-specific knowledge. The sandwich year and work placements provide substantial professional experience in the industry before you graduate, and a year abroad gives you the international perspective that a genuinely global industry demands. The foundation year provides a supported entry into degree-level study. Graduates work across the full range of organisations that make up the tourism and hospitality sector. Hotel and resort management, events and conference management, destination marketing organisations, tour operations, airline and cruise hospitality, heritage and visitor attraction management and tourism consulting are among the most common career paths. The international character of the industry means graduates who have studied abroad and gained professional experience in different cultural contexts are often particularly attractive to employers. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in tourism management, hospitality or events, deepening their expertise or moving into research.
