About this course
Theoretical Physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing and applying mathematical frameworks to explain how nature works at the most fundamental level. Where experimental physics seeks to observe and measure, theoretical physics seeks to understand: to build the conceptual and mathematical structures that give experimental observations their meaning and that predict phenomena that have not yet been observed. The history of theoretical physics is the history of some of the most profound intellectual achievements in human thought, from Newton's mechanics and Maxwell's electromagnetism through Einstein's relativity and the quantum revolution to the ongoing search for a unified theory of all forces. At the University of St Andrews, this five-year full-time Integrated Masters programme includes a year abroad and sets the highest academic standards, reflected in a typical entry tariff of 232 points. You will explore the fundamentals of theoretical physics from classical dynamics through to the intriguing theories of quantum mechanics and relativity, and learn how these foundational ideas are applied in fields such as quantum optics, condensed matter, quantum field theory and the broader applications of quantum physics.
