About this course

Theology and religious studies combined with social and public policy is a degree that connects the study of religion, ethics and belief with the practical and analytical field of how public policy is made and implemented. Theology and religious studies encompasses the study of religion in all its dimensions, from scripture and doctrine to the role of faith in politics, culture, social care and the law. Social and public policy examines how governments respond to social problems, how welfare systems are designed, how inequality is addressed and what values and evidence underpin policy choices. Together they form a degree for students who want to engage seriously with both the moral foundations of public life and its practical organisation. At Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different national academic environment and engage with how religion and public policy interact differently in other contexts. You will develop your theological and religious studies knowledge alongside a strong grounding in social policy analysis, learning to bring both perspectives to bear on questions of social care, welfare, justice and public ethics. Glasgow's departments in both areas are research-active and internationally regarded, and the combination benefits from the breadth and depth that a major research university provides. Graduates of this combination move into public policy, social care, local and national government, NGOs, faith-based organisations, education, health and social services and the voluntary sector. The combination of ethical reasoning and policy understanding is particularly valued in organisations working at the intersection of faith, community and public service. Postgraduate study in theology, social policy, public administration or ethics is a natural option.
