About this course
Sustainable development is one of the defining challenges of this century. It asks how human societies can meet the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their own, and it requires people who can bring together environmental science, economics, policy analysis, and an understanding of social change. The urgency of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and food insecurity makes this a field where analytical rigour and practical engagement are equally important. This four-year full-time programme at the University of East Anglia prepares you to address these pressing questions with the combination of scientific understanding and policy awareness they demand. You will study the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability, examining how different actors, from governments and international bodies to communities and businesses, respond to environmental pressures. The programme also includes a placement year, giving you direct professional experience in an organisation working on sustainability challenges. This experience allows you to apply what you have learned in an academic setting to real problems, and to develop the professional judgement and network that will support your career after graduation. You will leave with a grounding in the science of environmental change and the ability to evaluate and communicate policy responses to it. Graduates go on to work in environmental consultancy, government and regulatory bodies, NGOs, international development, sustainability roles within businesses, and research.
