About this course
Sustainable development and literature is a degree that brings together two fields with a shared concern for the future: one examining the social, economic, and environmental frameworks through which humanity attempts to live within planetary limits, and the other exploring how human beings have understood, narrated, and imagined their place in the world through the written word. Sustainable development draws on ecology, economics, ethics, and policy to ask what conditions are necessary for both people and the natural world to flourish over the long term. Literature offers a different but complementary lens, revealing how cultures have represented nature, place, resource, and obligation across time and traditions. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year programme allows you to engage seriously with both disciplines in an institution uniquely placed by its geography and ethos to make sustainable development tangible. You will develop skills in environmental analysis and sustainability thinking alongside the close reading, critical analysis, and interpretive skills that literary study demands.
