About this course

Sport studies is a broad and interdisciplinary field that examines sport not just as physical activity but as a significant social, cultural, political, and economic phenomenon. It draws on sociology, psychology, history, and policy analysis to ask fundamental questions about why sport matters, who participates and on what terms, how sporting organisations and events are governed, and what role sport plays in national identity, community life, and commercial culture. Students who come to sport studies with a genuine curiosity about these larger questions will find it a rich and intellectually demanding area of enquiry. At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme engages with the sociological and cultural dimensions of sport alongside questions of sports development, policy, and management. You will examine the historical development of sport as a modern institution, explore issues of gender, race, class, and disability in sporting contexts, and analyse how sporting organisations operate and are governed. Research methods training is an important part of the curriculum, equipping you to carry out your own investigations into sport as a social phenomenon. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, offering you the chance to experience sporting culture and sports management practices in a different country, and to develop the global perspective that is increasingly valuable in sport-related careers. Graduates in sport studies move into careers in sports development, community sport, sports administration, event management, coaching, sport journalism, and policy roles in national and local government. The analytical and research skills developed through the programme are also valued in consultancy, the voluntary sector, and roles that require critical thinking about social issues. Postgraduate study in sport management, sports sociology, or related fields is another common pathway.
