BA Sport Management
About this course
Sport management is the discipline concerned with how sport organisations are run, how events and leagues are administered, and how the business of sport functions at every level from community clubs to global franchises. It draws on management, marketing, finance, law, and organisational theory, but applies them to the distinctive context of sport: an industry shaped by passion, public interest, volunteer labour, media rights, and complex stakeholder relationships. As sport has grown into a major global industry and a significant component of public health and social policy, the demand for professionally trained managers in this sector has grown accordingly. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most experience-rich sport management programmes available. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, and alongside your degree you will gain a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership, a professional qualification that adds immediate credibility to your CV and demonstrates a standard of management competence recognised by employers across sectors. You will study sport business, event management, marketing, governance, finance, and the international dimensions of the sport industry, developing both the theoretical frameworks and the practical competence to manage effectively in this context. The placement year and work placement give you extended professional experience in sport organisations, which is often the most direct route into the industry. The year abroad broadens your understanding of how sport is managed in different cultural and commercial contexts. Graduates move into careers in sport administration, event management, facility management, sport marketing, sponsorship, media, community sport development, national governing bodies, and international sport organisations. Some move into broader management roles in other sectors, where the CMI qualification and management experience are highly portable.
