BSc Sport Coaching (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport coaching is the professional discipline concerned with guiding athletes and participants to improve their performance, enjoyment, and wellbeing through physical activity and sport. Effective coaching requires knowledge of exercise physiology, sports psychology, biomechanics, nutrition, and pedagogy, as well as the communication skills, emotional intelligence, and tactical understanding that allow coaches to work with diverse individuals and groups across different contexts. It is a discipline that is both scientifically grounded and fundamentally human in its application. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Northampton includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main degree. The foundation year develops the academic skills and scientific knowledge needed for degree-level study, before the core programme builds your understanding of human performance, coaching theory and practice, sports psychology, skill acquisition, and the organisation and management of sport. Northampton's programme emphasises applied learning: you will coach in real sporting contexts throughout your studies, developing practical skills alongside theoretical understanding. The East Midlands has a range of professional sports clubs and community sport organisations that provide placement and professional experience opportunities. Graduates from this programme pursue careers as coaches across a wide range of sports, working at community, club, performance, and elite levels. Many work in schools, leisure centres, sports clubs, and national governing bodies, while others move into sports development roles, talent pathway management, physical education support, and sports leadership. Professional coaching qualifications in specific sports can be pursued alongside or after the degree, and many graduates combine their degree-level sport coaching knowledge with national governing body qualifications to build well-rounded professional profiles. Postgraduate options include sports science, performance analysis, sports management, and physical education.
