BSc Sport Coaching
About this course
Sport coaching is the practice of supporting and developing athletes and sports participants at every level, from community beginners to elite performers. It is a discipline grounded in the science of skill acquisition, physiology, psychology, and performance analysis, but it is also a relational and communicative art, requiring coaches to understand the people they work with and to adapt their approach to different individuals, groups, and contexts. The best coaches combine evidence-based practice with professional judgement, drawing on a deep understanding of both sport and human development. At Robert Gordon University this two-year programme is designed for those progressing from HND study in sport coaching or a related area, providing a grounding in the theoretical and practical dimensions of contemporary coaching through an applied approach. You will engage with the latest research and thinking in coaching science, developing your ability to plan and deliver coaching sessions, analyse performance, and support athlete wellbeing and long-term development. The emphasis on evidence-based practice means you learn to draw on research and data as well as experience, developing the habits of reflection and enquiry that characterise effective professional coaches. Graduates from sport coaching programmes work across a wide range of sporting and physical activity contexts. Roles include head coach and assistant coach at club and academy level, community sports development officer, sports coordinator, performance analyst, and coach developer or educator. Many work in football, rugby, athletics, swimming, and other major sports, while others work in school sport, disability sport, and community health and physical activity programmes. Further study at postgraduate level in sport coaching, sports science, or sport management is an option for those wishing to deepen their expertise or move into research or senior leadership roles in sport.
