BA Sport Coaching and Education
About this course
Sport coaching and education brings together two fields that are more closely related than they might initially appear. Effective coaching is fundamentally an educational process, concerned with how athletes learn, how skills are developed, how confidence and motivation are built, and how coaches communicate and create the conditions in which people improve. Studying both together provides a more complete understanding of the human dimensions of sport than either field offers on its own. University College Birmingham offers this three-year full-time degree, grounding you in the theory and practice of sports coaching alongside the educational principles and pedagogical frameworks that underpin effective teaching and learning in physical activity contexts. You will develop knowledge of skill acquisition, coaching methodology, physical development, athlete wellbeing, safeguarding and the planning and evaluation of coaching sessions at different levels and with different populations. The education component introduces you to learning theory, curriculum design, inclusion and the broader professional context in which sport education operates, whether in schools, community sport or performance pathways. University College Birmingham has strong industry and community connections in the West Midlands, providing context for applied learning throughout the programme. The degree develops practical coaching competence alongside a reflective, evidence-informed approach to practice. You will learn to plan, deliver and evaluate sessions thoughtfully, to adapt to the needs of different individuals and groups, and to understand your own development as a coach and educator. Graduates pursue careers as sport coaches, physical education teachers, sports development officers, community sport coordinators, performance pathway coaches and sports administrators. The combination of coaching and education skills is particularly well suited to roles in schools, local authority sport, community programmes and national governing body development pathways. Postgraduate study in sports coaching, sports science or education is available for those wishing to develop further.
