BSc Sport and Exercise Science
About this course
Sport and exercise science applies the methods of biology, physics, and psychology to understand human physical performance and the role of exercise in health. It draws on physiology to understand how the body responds and adapts to training; on biomechanics to analyse how forces and movement patterns affect performance and injury risk; and on psychology to examine the mental dimensions of sport and physical activity, from motivation and anxiety to team cohesion and performance under pressure. Together, these three core disciplines give you a rigorous scientific framework for understanding one of the most important aspects of human life. At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time degree is based at the King Alfred Campus, where state-of-the-art facilities in biomechanics, physiology, and psychology support the practical and laboratory dimensions of your learning. The programme is built around the three core sciences, and you will develop skills in research methods and data analysis alongside your subject knowledge, learning to evaluate scientific evidence critically and to apply it in real-world contexts. Teaching is delivered by academics whose work bridges research and applied practice, ensuring that what you learn is connected to how sport and exercise science is actually used by coaches, clinicians, and performance specialists. You will graduate with both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills to contribute in professional sport, health, or research settings. Graduates go on to careers in sports coaching and performance support, strength and conditioning, health and fitness, sport development, exercise rehabilitation, and public health. Many go on to postgraduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, sport psychology, public health, or research, using the scientific foundation of the degree to qualify for specialist professional roles. The breadth of the degree means graduates work across elite sport, community settings, healthcare, and the fitness industry.
