BSc Sport and Exercise Science
About this course
Sport and exercise science brings the methods of physiology, psychology and biomechanics to bear on human physical performance and the relationship between exercise and health. It addresses how the body responds and adapts to physical activity, how psychological factors influence athletic performance, how movement can be analysed and improved, and how exercise can be used to prevent and treat disease. These questions matter not only in the context of elite sport but in public health, physical education, rehabilitation and the growing field of preventive medicine. At Newcastle, this three-year programme provides a thorough grounding in all three core disciplines of the field. You will study exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, nutrition, research methods and statistics, and apply your knowledge through laboratory work, field studies and practical projects. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, which together give you professional experience in applied sport and exercise settings, the chance to study in an international academic context and direct exposure to how the discipline operates outside the university. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates work as strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists, exercise physiologists, physical education teachers (with further training), personal trainers, rehabilitation specialists, public health exercise promoters and sports development officers. The research and analytical skills developed through the programme are also valued in roles in health and wellbeing consultancy, sports data analysis and the growing wellness industry. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sport science, coaching, physical education, physiotherapy or sports medicine.
