About this course
Spanish and music is a combination that may seem unusual but has a genuine logic. Spanish connects you to a language of extraordinary global reach, spoken by more than 500 million people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond, and to a cultural tradition that has shaped literature, art, and music across the centuries, from the flamenco of Andalusia and the folk traditions of Latin America to contemporary pop and classical composition in the Spanish-speaking world. Music as a university discipline is both a creative and an intellectual practice, developing technical skills in performance, composition, and musicianship alongside the analytical and historical understanding of music as a cultural phenomenon. Together, the two subjects develop a distinctive breadth of cultural intelligence and creative capability. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme takes both strands seriously. You will study Spanish with staff who are native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, developing linguistic fluency alongside literary and cultural knowledge. The music strand develops your understanding of the history and theory of Western music, your analytical skills in musicology and music analysis, and your practical musicianship through performance and composition. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, both of which give you professional experience before graduation in contexts relevant to either strand of the degree. A typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the demands of the combined programme at one of the UK's leading universities.
