Songwriting is the craft of creating songs that connect with listeners, combining melodic invention, lyrical expression, and an understanding of musical structure to produce work that resonates emotionally and stands up to repeated listening. It is a discipline that requires both creative intuition and analytical understanding, asking writers to learn from the music that has come before and to develop their own distinctive voice in conversation with those traditions. At Leeds Conservatoire, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before beginning the main degree. Across the programme you will explore the structures, techniques, and creative decisions behind influential songs and records, using analytical tools to study arrangement, songcraft, and form. You will examine what makes songs work at a technical and emotional level and apply those insights to your own music. Lectures and peer discussion develop your technical vocabulary, deepen your compositional understanding, and help you build a more focused and reflective creative approach.
