BEng Software Engineering (BEng) (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Software engineering is the discipline of building reliable, efficient, and maintainable software systems at scale. Where computer science focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of computation, software engineering is concerned with the processes, methods, and tools by which large and complex software is designed, developed, tested, and deployed in real environments. Modern society depends on software in ways that are easy to underestimate: the systems that manage energy grids, healthcare records, financial transactions, and communications infrastructure are all products of software engineering practice, and the discipline addresses the challenge of making those systems trustworthy as well as functional. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year, full-time BEng programme includes a sandwich year and is available with a year abroad, giving you extended opportunities for both professional and international experience. The degree also includes a foundation year pathway for students who need additional preparation before entering the main programme, though the foundation year provision is indicated separately. You will develop skills in programming, systems design, software architecture, testing, project management, and the mathematical foundations that underpin sound engineering judgment. A work placement is built into the structure, providing direct professional exposure alongside your academic study. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects a welcoming approach to students with strong potential. Software engineering graduates are among the most consistently employed of any discipline. The technology industry, financial services, healthcare, government, defence, and the creative industries all need software engineers who can build and maintain complex systems. Roles include software developer, systems architect, test engineer, DevOps engineer, and technical project manager. The BEng qualification also provides a foundation for progression to chartered engineer status with further professional development. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in software engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, or data engineering, or move directly into demanding roles in a sector where skilled engineers are in persistent demand.
