BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the discipline that examines how societies are organised, how inequalities are produced and reproduced, and how cultural forces, political structures, and economic conditions shape the lives of individuals and communities. It develops the analytical tools to understand the social world critically and rigorously, engaging with questions of class, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, and identity, and with the contemporary challenges that societies face from climate change and migration to digital transformation and social movements. At York St John University, this part-time degree deepens your understanding of contemporary society through the study of social theory, encouraging you to investigate the challenges societies face and to engage seriously with topical social and cultural issues. You will examine existing and emerging social divisions and identities through a range of theoretical frameworks, developing critical reflection on popular media and social discourses alongside an empirical understanding of how social structures function and change. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placements, all of which add professional and international dimensions to your sociological education. Graduates of sociology degrees pursue careers across an exceptionally wide range of sectors. Social work, public policy, community development, education, journalism, research, the charity and voluntary sector, the civil service, human resources, and local government are all common destinations. The critical thinking, research competence, and communication skills the degree develops are transferable across any context where understanding people, organisations, and social structures matters. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, or criminology, building on the analytical foundations the undergraduate degree has provided.
