BSc Sociology with Psychology
About this course
Sociology with psychology is a combination that brings together two complementary approaches to understanding human beings: one that focuses on the social structures, institutions, and cultural forces that shape human life, and one that examines the psychological processes of the individual. Sociology asks how society is organised, how inequality is produced and reproduced, how social change happens, and how the groups we belong to shape our identities, opportunities, and experiences. Psychology investigates the mental processes of thought, emotion, perception, and behaviour, asking how individuals develop, learn, and respond to their environments. Together they offer a richer account of why people are the way they are than either can provide alone. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this part-time programme brings you into contact with leading social researchers and develops your ability to generate ideas and insights that can improve lives and the social structures around them. The course includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement component, giving you structured professional experience in research, social care, policy, or related settings during your studies. The combination is designed to put you in a strong position in the graduate job market, developing both sociological and psychological understanding alongside the research and analytical skills that employers value. You will develop research skills in both qualitative and quantitative methods, critical thinking, the ability to analyse social and psychological evidence, and the communication skills needed to translate that analysis into clear and useful recommendations. Graduates pursue careers in social research, policy, social care, human resources, marketing and communications, health promotion, education, the voluntary sector, and public administration. Postgraduate study in sociology, psychology, social policy, or social work is a natural continuation for those who want to develop specialist expertise or pursue practice roles.
